1997 BMW 840CS with 39,825 original miles in AS-NEW condition. Here is a very interesting show field find. I was walking around an Audrain Museum’s Cars and Coffee in Newport R.I. and came across this unreal 79 BMW 840CS. I walked around the car several times and looked inside and know I needed to own this car. I waited around for the owner to show up and I asked if he had an interest in selling his car. He responded with yes, I would, my interest has changed, and all my attention is on a Citroen I own and don’t have time for the 840. We discussed the car and made an appointment to meet on Monday at his home for a better inspection and a drive. Upon inspection I purchased the car. This is a near perfect example the has had three owners from new that were all friends. The car was never driven in poor weather and shows it. The leather is soft and supple and retains its color, the carpets and head liner as well look as new. There is a little crazing in the clear on the ashtray door, but all other wood is perfect. And the trunk is as left the factory. All tools are present and original, complete and with no corrosion. The BMW hand towel is in place and appears to have never been removed. And of course, the spare tire is original and has never been used. Please look at all the photos I have provided, everything is so very nice, the jams, the engine compartment, everywhere just like new. Its nearly impossible to make a vehicle look this nice with totally disassembling it. This car is what you find when you find that special car that has been loved and cared for from day one!
As you know the last year of production are always the best sorted vehicles. 1997 was in fact the last year of production for the US with only 387 copies important. Over the eight years the 8 series was imported to the United States there were only a total of 801 imported with the fabled 4.4 L engine.
This car comes with many documents, all four original keys, all of its manuals, all of its tools and is in all original condition in and out.
There is a nice wright up on the 8 Series car in the July Sports Car Market magazine. Here is what they had to say. 1990-1997 BMW 8 Series: series is one of the most beautiful and opulent touring coops ever produced. The E31 was offered both in a V-8 end of the V12 powered models, with your choice of automatic or six speed manual transmission.
The sleek pillarless and wedge shape design is unmistakable from any of the car built during the era the interior is spacious and the ergonomics combined comfort with aggressive design that lets you know that you’re in a high-performance machine. Copious amount of high-quality leather trends the entire cabin, in real wood accents were opted on fully loaded models.
The top-of-the-line limited-edition 850CSI models saw only 225 units delivered to the US, which help explain why prices of these vehicles has seen a huge swing into the six figures in recent years. However the V-8 powered 840i and 840CI cars can still be purchased in the mid-$20s to $60,000.00 range, depending on mileage, cosmetic and mechanical condition. Well sorted examples are well worth the premium up front, tired in the collected examples can hit the wall it hard if extensive refurbishment is needed.
The authors note says: after the 1968 through 7589 that gave us the breathtaking beauty of the 2800CS and 3.0CS family, the E31 8 series is one of the most striking and beautiful designs that come out of Dingolfing. The E31 carries a drag coefficient of.29cd courtesy of the patent and CAD system of Klaus Kapitza. While the V-8 engines are good, there’s nothing like of the V12 to fire up the blood, especially when paired with a six-speed manual transmission. This is a car people will still want to collect 20 years from now. This article was written by Laumbach for sports car market magazine.
